Malaysia’s KLIA and KLIA 2 Airports To Get New Names for Branding Purposes

Malaysia’s two most prominent airports — Kuala Lumpurt International Airport (KLIA) and Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (KLIA2) — are set to receive tweaks to their names for the sake of better branding.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke confirmed the impending name changes following a decision made during a cabinet meeting last week, where it was agreed that the names for the airports were to be KLIA Terminal 1 and KLIA Terminal 2 respectively.

He said that the rebranding exercise would be done with the aim of improving the marketability of the airports, as well as them competitive with other prominent airports in the region, such as Singapore’s Changi Airport and Thailand’s Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Bangkok.

“The proposal to rebrand KLIA and KLIA 2 are important for the sustainability of KLIA and also the growth of airports throughout the country,” he said during a press conference.

“It is not immediate since the rebranding is part of a new Operating Agreement (OA 2023) between the Malaysian and Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB).”

“The and MAHB will finalize and sign the OA 2023 and related Lease Agreements before the end of the quarter of 2023 (March 2023),” he added.

Loke did not provided a timeline for the upcoming changes, but revealed that it would be up to MAHB to proceed with the rebranding exercises following the signing of the agreement.
